Premarin (Conjugated Estrogens)

Application

Premarin is a mixture of female estrogen hormones that is used to treat symptoms of advanced breast cancer in certain patients. It may also be prescribed to cure certain symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, vaginal dryness or itching), preventing osteoporosis and treating advanced prostate cancer in men.

Application method

Premarin must be taken by mouth with food. Take it for the entire duration of treatment preferably at the same time everyday. Do not stop without consulting your doctor.

If you have a surgery coming up, then please stop taking it at least 4 to 6 weeks in advance.

The best way to use the drug is as recommended by your doctor.

The mechanism of action

Estrogens belong to the one of the two major classes of female hormones. (Progestins are the second major class.) Estrogens are used primarily for treatment of the symptoms of menopause and that state of health when the women have a deficiency of estrogens, for example, those women who have ovaries removed.

Interfacing estrogens to equine ones are a mixture of several different estrogens that are derived from the urine of pregnant mares. Estrogens have widespread effects on many tissues in the organism. Estrogens cause the growth and development of female sex organs and maintain female sex characteristics, such as the growth of underarm and pubic hair and the shape of body contours and skeleton. Estrogens also increase the discharge from the neck of uterus and the growth of the inner uterine lining (endometrium).

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you think of it, then go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose if it is not prescribed by your doctor.

Keeping

The medicine should be kept at room temperature of 15-30 degrees Celsius (59-77 degrees Fahrenheit).

Precautionary measures

There are no restrictions for food, drinks, or activities while taking conjugated estrogens unless your doctor prohibits it. Estrogens shall not be taken by pregnant women because of the risk of making harm to the baby. Estrogens are allocated in breast milk and cause unpredictable effects to the baby. During breast-feeding the medicine usage is strictly prohibited.

Side effects

Some of the common side effects of are abdominal/stomach pain, cough, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, unusual tiredness. Please contact your doctor if the symptoms persist or become bothersome.

Other severe side effects include allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), increased heartbeat, lightheadedness and fainting.

You must seek medical attention immediately if any of these side effects occur.
